Financial Performance and Operational Leverage

KMEW reported a significant uptick in its financial metrics for the first quarter of FY27, driven by high-margin execution in its core dredging segment. Operating revenue reached ₹115.41 crore, while EBITDA stood at ₹73.41 crore, representing a 258% year-on-year increase. The company's EBITDA margin expanded to 64%, well above its long-term conservative guidance of 35-40%.

Management attributed this performance to the execution of technically complex projects, such as capital rock dredging at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and maintenance dredging at Pondicherry Port. The results reflect strong operating leverage derived from specialized asset deployment.

Management Outlook and Guidance Upgrade

Encouraged by the Q1 performance and a robust bid pipeline, management has revised its FY27 revenue growth guidance. Initially projected at 30-40%, the company now expects growth to exceed 60% for the current financial year. Looking further ahead, KMEW is targeting a top line of ₹1,000 crore by FY29.

To support this growth, the company plans a capital expenditure of approximately ₹1,000 crore over the next 1.5 years. This investment will focus on adding larger capacity trailing suction hopper dredgers and expanding its shipbuilding capabilities, including the development of the Saphale shipyard.

Strategic Expansion in Shipbuilding

  • Phase 1 of the new Saphale shipyard is expected to be operational within the current financial year, with a capacity to deliver 14 vessels initially.
  • The company secured a ₹62.40 crore contract from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) for 10 hybrid electric passenger ferries.
  • Shipbuilding is projected to contribute 40-45% of the total revenue mix within the next 2 to 3 years.
  • KMEW is exploring export opportunities in the European market for vessels with a DWT capacity of approximately 3,000 tonnes.

Core Business Segments

The main hero of our revenue this quarter was our dredging segment. The strong performance during the quarter was primarily achieved due to the execution of the two key projects, the capital rock dredging project at JNPA and the maintenance dredging project at Pondicherry port.

— Kanak Kewalramani, Director and CFO, KMEW

What to Watch

  • Conversion of the ₹3,500 crore bid pipeline into firm orders over the next 30 to 45 days.
  • Commissioning and ramp-up of the Saphale shipyard to reach full capacity of 18 vessels per annum.
  • Execution of the ₹1,000 crore capex plan and its impact on debt levels and cash flows.
  • Sustainability of the expanded operating margins as the revenue mix shifts toward shipbuilding.

“We believe the order book is streaming up well, and there is a potential in northwards of 60% for the current year now.”

— Mr. Sujay Kewalramani, Chief Executive Officer

“By strengthening our shipbuilding capabilities, we are progressively creating an integrated maritime platform where we can design, build, own, operate and maintain and charter specialized marine vessels.”

— Mrs. Kanak Kewalramani, Director and Chief Financial Officer
