A Massive ₹35,000 Crore Thermal Power Complex

NLC India Limited has formalized a strategic entry into Odisha's industrial landscape by signing Memorandums of Understanding with IPICOL. The primary project involves the development of a 3200 MW Ultra Super Critical coal-based thermal power plant, split across four units of 800 MW each. This single initiative represents a potential investment of 35,000 crore rupees, significantly exceeding the company's current market capitalization of 32,273.97 crore rupees.

The project is designed to bolster the state's power infrastructure while creating direct employment for approximately 4,000 individuals, aligning with long-term regional development objectives and industrial expansion goals.

Exploring Mineral Processing and Coal Gasification

  • Establishment of a beach sand mineral processing facility with a tentative investment of 2,000 crore rupees
  • Expected generation of 500 new jobs through the mineral processing unit in the Odisha region
  • Technical feasibility study for coal gasification to produce synthesis gas for the fertilizer sector
  • Support for the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision by integrating coal and fertilizer production cycles
  • Promotion of mineral-based industrial growth and socio-economic development in coastal Odisha

Strategic Partnership Momentum and Guidance

This Odisha partnership follows a sequence of strategic alliances formed earlier in 2026. On July 8, 2026, NLC India entered a 12,000 crore rupee joint venture with NALCO for a 1,080 MW captive power plant in Angul. Other recent MoUs include a June 2026 agreement with Indian Oil for renewable energy and a May 2026 tie-up with NPCIL for nuclear power.

These developments support management's September 2026 guidance to scale renewable capacity to 10 GW and mining output to 104.35 MTPA by 2030, building on the successful full commissioning of the Ghatampur project in June 2026.

Financial Performance and Market Positioning

From a financial perspective, NLC India is currently categorized as a value stock with a P/E ratio of 10.06, notably lower than the industry average of 20.6. For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, the company reported operating revenue of 4,716.75 crore rupees and a net profit of 484.27 crore rupees. While quarterly profit saw a year-on-year decline of 39.3%, annual net profit growth remains robust at 34.37%.

With a Piotroski Score of 7 and trailing twelve-month revenue of 18,380.67 crore rupees, the company maintains a stable financial position to explore these multi-billion-crore capital expenditure projects.
