Scaling Capacity at the Sambalpur Steel Hub

JSW JFE Steel Limited, a 50:50 joint venture between JSW Steel and JFE Steel Corporation of Japan, currently operates a 4.5 MTPA integrated steel plant at Sambalpur, Odisha, along with downstream facilities in Chandigarh and Kolkata. With the Sambalpur unit currently operating at near full capacity, the board has approved a new 5 MTPA expansion and upgradation project. This development is designed to address increasing domestic steel demand and align with the joint venture's long-term growth strategy.

The project aims to improve economies of scale and expand value-added product offerings for both domestic and export markets.

Financial Outlay and Project Timeline

  • The expansion requires a total equity contribution of ₹7,500 crore from the joint venture partners
  • JSW Steel and JFE Steel will each contribute ₹3,750 crore toward the project equity
  • Physical implementation of the project is expected to commence from April 2027
  • The expansion is targeted for completion over an approximately 3.5-year period
  • Commencement is subject to the receipt of necessary statutory and environmental approvals
  • The deal value represents approximately 2.6% of JSW Steel's current market capitalization

Broader Strategic Growth and UAE Expansion

Beyond the Sambalpur expansion, JSW Steel's board approved the incorporation of a wholly-owned subsidiary in the UAE. This new entity, focused on steel and mining industry segments, will act as an overseas investment and trading arm with an initial capital of AED 100,000. This move follows a series of large-scale strategic initiatives, including the May 2026 approval of a ₹26,000 crore brownfield expansion at Vijayanagar and the April 2026 joint venture with POSCO for a greenfield plant in Odisha.

These projects support the company's broader target to reach a domestic crude steelmaking capacity of 42 MTPA by September 2027.
